This change probably isn’t Wong’s doing directly, but the updates to the English subtitles are distinctly different from the older releases. These changes by no means ruined the experience for me, but I believe they are worth discussing. It should be noted that there are a few reworked elements in Chungking Express too, which took me by surprise. I know there’s been quite a bit of scuttlebutt on this forum about the tinkering WKW did with these new restorations, most notably the aspect ratio of Fallen Angels and the color scheme of In The Mood For Love. The ambient sounds of the city come through crystal clear, which really adds to the immersion of the film (especially with headphones). Looking back on the older restoration, I was surprised with how washed out everything appeared in comparison. The colors are more saturated and punchy as well. The images are darker than the prior Criterion release, which gives the neon-lit Hong Kong of the film a more dramatic look. To start, the overall technical quality of this new restoration is fantastic.
